The Moments that made being an Alt Wedding DJ at Emma & Rebekah’s Fazeley Studios Celebration Great!
Introduction
When couples search for an Alt Wedding DJ, they’re usually looking for something outside of the usual cheesy wedding playlist. That’s exactly what Emma & Rebekah wanted for their big day at Fazeley Studios in Birmingham. Their love of emo, alt-rock, and even Sleep Token shaped a soundtrack that was bold, personal, and unforgettable.
A Ceremony of Soundtrack Choices
The night began with a twist on tradition. Instead of a formal first dance, Emma & Rebekah kicked things off with Teenage Dirtbag by Wheatus — a track guaranteed to get Bek’s side of the family straight onto the floor. I gave their cake cutting its own soundtrack with: Vitamin String Quartet’s version of Sweet Child O’ Mine followed by Anni B Sweet’s acoustic take on Take On Me. It set the tone for the night: heartfelt, alternative, and completely them.
Why an Alt Wedding DJ Matters
As an Alt Wedding DJ, my job isn’t just to play crowd-pleasers. It’s to balance the songs that mean everything to the couple with the moments that keep the dancefloor alive. At this wedding, The Summoning by Sleep Token was one of their must-plays. It was heavy, dramatic… and it completely cleared the floor — apart from the brides.
And that it cleared the dancefloor might seem like a disaster for a DJ… but it’s okay. In fact, that’s what it’s all about. When a guest commented that they “didn’t like the song”, I gently turned them round to look at Emma & Rebekah dancing together in their own world, and said, “that’s fine. It’s not for you”.
Because those are the moments that matter most — music chosen by the couple, for the couple, on the biggest night of their lives.
And later, one of the brides’ mums admitted she “didn’t get” The Summoning, but said it made her night to see her daughter so happy and in love dancing to it.
Balancing the Couple’s Vision with the Crowd
Of course, it wasn’t all intensity and floor-clearing tracks. There were also moments that had the entire room bouncing. Fall Out Boy’s Sugar, We’re Goin Down packed the dancefloor, with guests shouting every lyric. Spice Girls’ Wannabe and Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance were unashamed crowd favourites, while Oasis and Arctic Monkeys brought that Britpop swagger with tunes by David Bowie, Blondie, Joy Division and The Cure that bridged generations.
That balance — between the personal and the universal — is exactly what a good Alt Wedding DJ should deliver.

The Magic of Moments
Another touching moment came when one of the brides’ dads requested I Am the Resurrection by The Stone Roses, dedicating it to his daughter.
That’s the beauty of an Alt Wedding DJ set: the music becomes a story, weaving together the couple’s identity, their families, and their guests into one unforgettable night.
Why Book an Alt Wedding DJ?
If you’re a couple who don’t feel represented by the standard wedding soundtrack, working with an Alt Wedding DJ means you can have a night that truly feels like you. Whether it’s emo, pop-punk, metal, goth, indie, electro-swing, or alternative pop, your tastes can take centre stage without losing sight of the party.
Conclusion
Emma & Rebekah’s wedding was a perfect example of why I love being an Alt Wedding DJ. It wasn’t about sticking to traditions or playing safe. It was about telling their story through music, creating unforgettable moments, and striking that balance between intimate couple-focused tracks and dancefloor anthems.
If you’re planning your own wedding and want the soundtrack to reflect who you really are, I’d love to chat. Let’s make your night as unforgettable as theirs.

The sky above, the earth below
Nothing to say and nowhere to go
A taste of the divine”
