A Download Festival Wedding at Donington Park Farmhouse
As I’m writing this, thousands of rock and metal fans are revelling in Donington for this year’s Download Festival. For alternative music fans, Donington is hallowed ground. It’s hosted some of the biggest names in rock and metal history, and there’s something special about the atmosphere around the area when Download weekend rolls around.
A couple of weeks before this year’s festival began, I had the absolute pleasure of DJing what can only really be described as a proper Download Festival Wedding at Donington Park Farmhouse.
And honestly? It was brilliant.
Planning a Download Festival Wedding
From my very first conversation with Rob & Chelsie, I knew this was going to be a wedding where the music mattered.
Both are metalheads at heart, and they wanted their wedding to feel like them. They didn’t want a copy-and-paste wedding playlist or a night built entirely around the same handful of songs people hear at every wedding. At the same time, they still wanted guests of all ages to feel included and have a great time.
That balancing act is one of my favourite things about alternative weddings.
A great Download Festival Wedding isn’t about playing heavy music all night regardless of the crowd. It’s about understanding the couple, understanding the room, and gradually building an atmosphere that feels authentic to them.
We spent a long time discussing:
- emo and pop-punk favourites,
- nu metal and metalcore,
- songs they absolutely loved,
- songs they definitely didn’t want,
- and the overall feeling they wanted the evening to have.
That’s something I always focus on during consultations. Music shapes the emotional identity of a wedding far more than people often realise.

A Perfect Summer Evening at Donington Park Farmhouse
The weather could not have been better.
It was one of those ridiculously hot late-May evenings where guests naturally drift outside with drinks in hand, enjoying the sunshine and catching up in the courtyard. Donington Park Farmhouse was absolutely gorgeous in the sun and created the perfect relaxed atmosphere early in the evening.
That environment actually shaped the musical approach to the night too.
Early on, while guests were still spread between the bar, courtyard and dancefloor room, I focused on recognisable crossover tracks and singalong favourites that could carry through the venue naturally. A Download Festival Wedding still needs to invite people in gradually.
One of the things I love about alternative weddings is that you can use familiar songs in unexpected ways:
- rock covers of pop songs,
- nostalgic emo singalongs,
- pop-punk crossover tracks,
- and heavier songs at the right moments later in the night.
Building the Dancefloor at a Download Festival Wedding
As the evening progressed, the dancefloor slowly began to evolve from relaxed summer wedding atmosphere into full alternative wedding chaos.
There’s always a really satisfying moment at weddings like this where you can feel the identity of the night properly locking into place.
For Rob & Chelsie’s wedding, that meant:
- Blink-182,
- Avril Lavigne,
- Fall Out Boy,
- My Chemical Romance,
- Linkin Park,
- Paramore,
- Sum 41,
- Reel Big Fish,
- Electric Callboy,
- and eventually a full room screaming along to Welcome To The Black Parade.
At one point both the bride and groom ended up on people’s shoulders while singing along with their friends. From behind the DJ booth, those are the moments you remember.
One of my favourite parts of the night was seeing how naturally the crowd followed the musical journey. Guests who might not normally describe themselves as “alternative” were still fully getting involved because the music was introduced in a way that felt fun, nostalgic and accessible.
That’s something I think gets misunderstood about alternative weddings sometimes. They don’t have to feel exclusive or intimidating. In fact, some of the best wedding dancefloors happen when people feel invited into the couple’s world rather than shut out by it.
Working Alongside Dave McPherson
Another brilliant part of the day was getting to work alongside Dave McPherson, the lead vocalist of InMe, who performed as the wedding singer on the evening.
One of my favourite moments from the entire day came before the evening party had even properly begun.
As the sun started to lower over Donington Park Farmhouse, Rob & Chelsie shared their first dance out on the lawn while Dave performed Saccharine Arcadia live.
It was one of those genuinely special wedding moments where everything just seemed to align perfectly:
- the weather,
- the atmosphere,
- the setting,
- and the music.
Guests gathered around the edge of the lawn in the evening sunshine while the couple danced together outside the barn, creating a moment that felt incredibly personal and completely fitting for a Download Festival Wedding.
For a pair of alternative music fans, and Rob being a HUGE InMe fan, having Dave there to perform live made the whole thing feel even more meaningful.
Dave was fantastic throughout the day and an absolute pleasure to work alongside. If you’re into alternative acoustic performances, emo, rock or post-hardcore music, I’d definitely recommend checking out his work.

Why I Love Alternative Weddings
One of the reasons I love DJing alternative weddings so much is that they tend to feel incredibly personal.
Rather than simply following a formula, couples are often thinking carefully about:
- what music shaped them,
- what songs mean something to their friendships,
- and what kind of atmosphere they actually want their wedding to have.
That doesn’t mean abandoning crowd-pleasers entirely. It means building a night that feels authentic rather than generic.
By the end of Rob & Chelsie’s Download Festival Wedding, the dancefloor was packed with guests singing along to emo, pop-punk and alternative classics, and the atmosphere in the room was incredible.
Their review afterwards genuinely meant the world to read:
“Every time we saw, heard or were on the dancefloor the EXACT right music was playing.”
That’s always the goal.
